VOCABULARY


GRASP (VERB)
DEFINITION:
To take hold of something/someone suddenly and firmly; to understand something completely.
EXAMPLE:
-  Lisa grasped the child firmly by the hand before crossing the road.
-      I don’t think you have grasped how serious the situation is.

STATUTORY (ADJECTIVE)
DEFINITION:
Decided by law.
EXAMPLE:
-      We have to respect and obey the statutory right.

AMNESTY (NOUN)
DEFINITION:
A time when a government forgives political crimes.
EXAMPLE:
- The government has announced amnesty for all political prisoners.

RETALIATE (VERB)
DEFINITION:
To react to something unpleasant that somebody does to you by doing something unpleasant in return.
EXAMPLE:
-      They have announced that they will retaliate against anyone who attacks their country.

SEVER (VERB)
DEFINITION:
To cut something into two pieces; to cut something off; to end a relationship or communication with somebody.
EXAMPLE:
-      The builders accidentally severed a water pipe.
-   He has severed all links with his former friends
