VOCABULARY

SUBDUE (verb)
Definition:
to reduce the force of something, or to prevent something from existing or developing.
Example:
The fire burned for eight hours before the fire crews could subdue it.

SUBJUGATE (verb)
Definition:
a. (DEFEAT) to defeat people or a country and rule them in a way that allows them no freedom.
The communist used to subjugate Malaysia where the Malays had no authorities toward the country.
Definition:
b. (CONTROL) to treat yourself, your wishes, or your beliefs as being less important than other people or their wishes or beliefs:
Example:
She subjugated herself to her mother's needs.

DRONE (noun)
Definition:
a low continuous noise that does not change its note.
Example:
Outside the tent I could hear the constant drone of insects.

SCINTILLATING (adjective)
Definition:
funny, exciting, and clever.
Example:
a scintillating personality will be liked by everyone.

INTONE (verb)
Definition:
 to say something slowly and seriously in a voice that does not rise or fall much:
Example:
[+ speech] "Let us pray," the priest intoned to his congregation.
