VOCABULARY

Oust (verb)
Definition:
to force someone to leave a position of power, job, place, or competition.
Example:
The president was ousted (from power) in a military coup in January 1987.

Predecessor (noun)
Definition:
someone who had a job or a position before someone else, or something that comes before another thing in time or in a series.
Example:
My predecessor worked in this job for twelve years.

Sanguinary (adjective)
Definition:
(of someone or someone's character) positive and hoping for good things.
Example:
They are less sanguine about the prospects for peace.

Dauntless (adjective)
Definition:
showing determination and no fear.
Example:
In spite of the scale of the famine, the relief workers struggled on with dauntless optimism.

Castigate (verb)
Definition:
to criticize someone or something severely.
Example:
Health inspectors castigated the kitchen staff for poor standards of cleanliness.
