VOCABULARY

Garner (verb)
Definition:
to collect something, usually after much work or with difficulty.
Example:
Coppola garnered several Oscar awards for "The Godfather".

Inveterate (adjective)
Definition:
someone who does something very often and cannot stop doing it.
Example:
I never trust anything he says - the man's an inveterate liar.

Balk (verb)
to be unwilling to do something or to allow something to happen.
Example:
I balked at the prospect of spending four hours on a train with him.

Conciliate (verb)
Definition:
to end a disagreement or someone's anger by acting in a friendly way or slightly changing your opinions, or to satisfy someone who disagrees with you by acting in this way.
Example:
An independent adviser has been brought in to conciliate between the two sides involved in the conflict.

Stolid (adjective)
Definition:
(of a person) calm and not showing emotion or excitement, or 
(of a thing) not interesting or attractive.
Example:
-He's a very stolid, serious man.
-The college is a stolid-looking building with no lawn.
