VOCABULARY


Apocryphal (adjective)
Definition:
An apocryphal story is probably not true although it is often told and believed by some people to have happened.
Example:
It's a good story but I dare say it's apocryphal.

Circumlocution (noun)
Definition:
(an example of) an indirect way of saying something, especially something unpleasant.
Example:
"Economical with the truth" is a circumlocution for "lying".

Discern (verb)
Definition:
to see, recognize, or understand something that is not clear.
Example:
I could just discern a figure in the darkness.

Fickle (adjective)
Definition:
likely to change your opinion or your feelings suddenly and without a good reason.
Example:
She's so fickle - she's never been interested in the same man for more than a week!

Parry (verb)
Definition:
a.to defend yourself from a weapon or an attack by pushing the weapon away or by putting something between your body and the weapon.

Definition:
b.to manage cleverly to avoid dealing with a difficult question or some criticism.
Example:
Predictably the president parried enquiries about the arms scandal.
